The Vale of Neath is one of those parts of South Wales that couples from outside the region tend to discover and immediately love. The valley runs north from the town of Neath into a landscape that gets wilder and more dramatic the further you go — wooded hillsides, rivers, the particular quality of light that comes when you're enclosed by hills on either side.
It's also, increasingly, where some of the region's most interesting wedding venues are. And I'm here photographing them.
I'm Andrew, a documentary wedding photographer based in Swansea. Neath and the Vale of Neath sit just east of my home city, and I photograph weddings here regularly.
Venues in Neath and the Vale
The Glyn Clydach is the venue I come back to most often in this area. A beautifully converted Welsh farmhouse and barn, it has the warmth and authenticity of a place that was built for something real and has been genuinely loved ever since. I photographed a wedding here in early September — the light through the barn doors, the stone walls of the courtyard, the farmhouse exterior in late afternoon and it's one of those venues that makes photography feel effortless.
The Vale of Neath also has a range of other settings that suit different kinds of couples — from the estate grounds of venues further up the valley to the woodland and riverside settings that give this part of South Wales its particular character.
The Landscape Around Neath
One of the things I enjoy most about photographing weddings in the Vale of Neath is the landscape that surrounds the venues. The Brecon Beacons are close enough to be genuinely accessible for portrait sessions that want scale and drama. The Afan Forest Park, to the west, offers extraordinary woodland. The river valleys have a lush, enclosed quality that photographs beautifully.
For couples whose venue is in the area but who want portraits in something bigger and wilder, this landscape gives real options — particularly for autumn weddings, when the colours in the valley are extraordinary.
Getting There
I'm based in Swansea, which puts Neath around 20 minutes away. I travel to venues in Neath and the Vale of Neath without additional charge. For venues further north into the valley or toward the Brecon Beacons, I'm happy to discuss travel arrangements.
